ArcPath Sourcing steel building quote comparison

ArcPath Sourcing is an independent sourcing partner. This page is the working method for a comparable request. It does not claim authorized dealer status and it does not repeat a brand story. Each supplier should price the same use, the same geometry, and the same responsibility split.

Normalize the technical basis

Ask every quoter to name the code edition they used, the authority having jurisdiction, and the design criteria sheet. Wind speed, wind exposure category, ground snow load, and seismic design category should appear as inputs, not as a promise that a building already complies. Floor design live load and design dead load belong on that same sheet, with the unit written beside the number.

Primary frame, secondary framing, purlin spacing, and girt spacing are separate lines. A rigid frame with hot-rolled columns is not interchangeable with a cold-formed steel package just because both are called steel buildings. Volumetric modules can carry more finish off site, but the transport envelope and crane lift plan become the constraint. Panelized construction can pack tighter, while more assembly stays exposed to weather. If a crane is planned, the runway beam and bracket reactions stay outside the shell number until a supplier includes them in writing.

Split enclosure from structure

Roof panels, wall panels, trim, doors, and insulation can move the total more than the frame weight. Write the enclosure as its own group: bare sheeting, liner, or insulated metal panel, plus the thermal transmittance or R-value the project is trying to discuss with the local reviewer. Fire-resistance rating, if the occupancy needs one, is a tested assembly question for the quoted build-up, not a slogan on a brochure.

Corrosion exposure, coastal salt, fertilizer storage, and wash-bay humidity should be named so coating mass is not guessed later. A supplier that excludes coatings, fasteners, or sealant should mark those lines excluded rather than leaving a blank cell.

Keep logistics on one basis

State how many buildings or modules, the destination ZIP, site access limits, and who unloads. Freight, taxes, duties, and installation are separate lines from the fabricated package. A partial shipment rule matters when anchor bolts or secondary framing arrive before the primary frame. The requested delivery window is a buyer date, not a promise this desk can make.

Foundation interface, anchor-bolt plan, and slab recess details should say who designs them and who installs them. Utilities, permits, and site work stay buyer-side unless a quotation explicitly takes them.

IBC or IRC applicability is a local question. HUD Code applies to a different housing path and should not be pasted onto a site-built steel building file. AISC 360 and ASCE 7 are references an engineer of record may require; this desk does not certify that a supplier meets them.

Questions buyers raise while matching quotes

Price lines

Why can two low quotes still not be compared?

One number may be a rigid frame only. The other may include girts, panels, doors, freight, and anchor bolts. Until both files use the same inclusion marks, the lower figure is not a lower project cost.

Where does an optional budget sit?

Write currency and whether the figure is per building or for the whole order. The budget is a buyer target. It is not a published price and it does not create a verified supplier grade.

Responsibility

Who confirms code compliance?

The authority having jurisdiction and the project design professionals confirm compliance. A sourcing desk can collect the criteria and the supplier assumptions. It cannot declare a building approved.

What should be excluded on purpose?

If the buyer already holds the foundation design or the electrical contract, those scopes should be excluded in every quote so the remaining package can be lined up.

Evidence

Which paper belongs to this order?

Ask for documents that name the quoted member sizes, the project loads, and the plant. A general certificate without those ties stays in a pending column.

Ready for a like-for-like request

  • Same use, geometry, and load sheet for every supplier.
  • Scope and exclusions marked included, excluded, or optional.
  • Freight, taxes, and installation kept off the frame line.
  • Drawings requested for the system actually quoted.

Send the brief

Send the building use, dimensions, quantity, destination, and requested scope. An optional budget and supplier preference help identify which trade-offs to discuss.
